Everyone has to get into the act. As I'm typing this, an outdoor Christian mass is taking place on the street below our hotel room. The justification? They are celebrating the Creator of the Horse!
Five red gold pieces of paper clustered together representing the five desires: Health, prosperity, peace, longevity and to die a natural death.
For the Sheep and the Tiger (moi and Rene) the Year of the Horse is going to be great! Yay!The hotel is putting on a number of New Year's events in the lobby. We just came back from seeing the traditional eye-dotting ceremony and a lion dance and the God of Wealth will visit all the hotels restaurants sharing lucky "Lai See" packets with guests as he passes.
Across the top, from left to right:
Lotus seeds - a traditional sign that many children are to be born into the family.
Melon seeds and fire crackers - an indication of wealth and prosperity.
Candied lotus root - a blessing of health to your family (and delish. by the way)
Candied carrot - a blessing of health to the family
Gold coins - a sign of great prosperity (self explanatory really).
Shredded coconut - a symbol of harmony.
Water chestnuts - a traditional sign that promotion is coming.
More candied lotus root and candied carrots because you can't have too much health!
