We started our tour at the Independence Square, the site where Malaysia's independence from Great Britain was announced at midnight on 31 August, 1957. We then took a short walk to the Jamek Mosque, the city’s oldest mosque. The unusual red brick makes a striking contrast to the modern hi-rise buildings that surround it.

Desperate for food and coffee, we stopped for a traditional breakfast of toasted bread spread with a rich egg and coconut based jam. Delicious!
